Triple Treat Irish Chain Quilt
Triple Treat Irish Chain Quilt
Hello all of you Moda Bakers! I am Jen Van Orman from Heritage Threads and I am so excited to share my recipe with you today. It uses the brand new 3.5" Moda Treats precut. If you haven't had a chance to see these yet in person, they are the perfect size. Not too big, not too small. I had the pleasure of making not one, but two quilts to show the variety of this spin on a traditional Triple Irish Chain pattern. One quilt is done in Handmade by Bonnie and Camille and the other quilt is done in Courtyard by 3 Sisters
This quilt/project finishes at 72" x 72".
4 Moda Treats packs {Handmade by Bonnie & Camille or Courtyard by 3 Sisters}
3 yards background fabric {Crossweave in Black or Crossweave in Sand}
1.5 yards border fabric
5 yards backing fabric
2/3 yards binding fabric
Cutting requirements:
(4) 15-1/2" x 15-1/2" background squares
(16) 3-1/2" x 9-1/2" background strips
(141) 3-1/2" x 3-1/2" background squares
(8) 5" x width of fabric (WOF) border
Begin by cutting all of your background parts, starting with the (4) 15-1/2" x 15-1/2" squares. Cut 2 strips of fabric that are 15-1/2" x WOF, then subcut into 15-1/2" x 15-1/2" squares. Save the leftover pieces and use them to cut (4) of the 3-1/2" x 9-1/2" strips. Cut 1 strip of fabric that is 9-1/2" x WOF to finish cutting the remaining (12) 3-1/2" x 9/1/2" pieces. Lastly, cut 11 strips of fabric that are 3 1/2" x WOF and subcut into (141) 3-1/2" x 3-1/2" squares.
You may choose to cut your border strips now or after your main portion of the top is completed. When you choose to do this, cut 8 strips of fabric that are 5" x WOF, sew into sets of 2 and use as your border.
There are 2 main block types in this quilt. We'll start with Block A:
Attach 2 treats to (8) 3-1/2" x 9-1/2" background strips on both ends, as shown below as strip A. Press towards the treat. Chain piece 16 Treats to (16) 3-1/2" x 3-1/2" background squares. Press towards the treat. Attach this set to the remaining (8) 3-1/2" x 9-1/2" background strips as shown below as strip B.
Attach piece A to two opposite sides on each 15-1/2" x 15-1/2" square. Press towards the center square.
Attach piece B on opposite sides on each 15-1/2" x 15-1/2" square, press toward the center square, and you are all done with block A!
Block B:
Set aside (5) 3-1/2" x 3-1/2" background squares to save for later. Piece together the remaining 3-1/2" x 3-1/2" background squares with your Moda Treats. You will have excess treats so feel free to leave out any that you think might stand out too much in your quilt. Press toward the Treats.
Set aside (40) 2-piece units to be used later. Make (40) units of 2 pieces by combining 2 sets of 2-piece units. Use the (40) 2-piece units you set aside to grow each row to 6-piece units. You will end up with 40 rows of 6.
Choose 5 rows and add the remaining (5) 3-1/2" x 3-1/2" background squares to their appropriate side to make 5 rows of 7 pieces. Depending on how you assemble your rows together, you may need to omit the 5 background squares and add 5 Treats instead. There is no right or wrong way to assemble this. Either way you will have more than enough background squares and Treats to make it right. Set these 5 rows aside for later.
Sew 7 rows of 6 together to make 5 different patchwork blocks.
Sew on the 5 rows of 7 that you set aside, one to each block and your Block B is all done.
Assemble the quilt in rows, as follows:
Attach your borders and quilt as desired.
Here are my 2 finished quilts. This pattern works so well to highlight different fabrics in both a traditional and more modern way.
This quilt finishes at 72" x 72".
I really enjoyed making both versions of this quilt. They really are so very different and both are so beautiful! Tag me on instagram @heritage-threads when you make one! I'd love to see it.
