Patchwork Ornaments
Patchwork Ornaments
Today I'm sharing a pattern for three patchwork ornaments, all based on classic quilt blocks. These cute little ornaments can be hung on your Christmas tree or used as gift toppers. There are three in the set, making a nice option for a handmade hostess gift, as well.
These ornaments each finish at about 3 1/2" square.
This project is a great scrap buster, so dig in and see what little bits you find to use! I used scraps I had leftover from several lines, including JOL by Wenche Wolff Hatling.
Each mini block will require scraps from two different fabrics as noted below in the instructions, a piece of backing about 5" square (leftover charm squares work well), and a strip of binding, 2" wide and about 18" long.
Don't stick to just holiday fabrics! Reds, greens, yellows and creams from non-Christmas fabrics will all work well.
Nine Patch
Cut five squares from Fabric A and four squares from Fabric B, each measuring 1 1/2".
Sew rows together. Two rows will have Fabric A on the outside and Fabric B in the middle. One row will have Fabric B on the outside and Fabric A in the middle. Press towards Fabric A.
Sew the rows together to form the nine patch.
Sandwich, quilt and bind.
Sew a ribbon to one side or corner for hanging.
Friendship Star
From Fabric A, cut one 1 1/2" square and two 2 1/2" squares.
From Fabric B, cut two 2 1/2" squares and four 1 1/2" squares.
Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of one of the 2 1/2" squares.
Place one square from Fabric A and one from Fabric B right sides together. Sew 1/4" away on both sides of the drawn line.
Cut along the center line. Press open. Repeat with the other 2 1/2" squares.
Trim the half square triangles to 1 1/2".
Sew the block together using the following sketch as a reference.
Sandwich, quilt and bind.
Sew a ribbon to one side or corner for hanging.
Orange Peel
Draw an orange peel shape 2" long and about 7/8" wide.
Trace the shape on a fusible web (such as Wonder Under or Heat and Bond) four times.
Fuse each to scraps of fabric.
Cut orange peel shapes.
Cut a piece of background fabric 3 1/2" square. Mark the center.
Fuse the orange peel shapes to the background, using either of the layouts below.
Stitch around the edges using a blanket stitch or a zig zag stitch.
Hope you enjoy this fun, quick holiday project.
